Friday Newsletter: №5

Hey Friends and welcome back to my 5th Friday Newsletter!

Every week I’m sharing: One Insight, One Source and One Question which I found particularly striking or useful, so you can read, reflect and take action.

This one will be dedicated to your awareness as a leader!

Weekly insight

Context: as some of you might know, I’m currently studying at Brown University: Leadership & Performance coaching program (here is the link in case you are looking for something similar). I find it very useful as it gives 1) very practical knowledge and 2) great network in the US (as I was looking for new connections outside of Europe & tech industry as well).

Few things I wanted to share with you as many people are confused what “coach” does. Indeed, this industry is less regulated (which is a curse and a blessing), so many people call themselves as “coaches”.

First of all, I wanted to share the difference between the “coach”, “mentor”, “therapist” and “advisor”:

  • Coach doesn’t share their experience or give an advice (compare to mentor or advisor). Why is it important?

    • We all have different experiences and backgrounds. Any advice, which I could share with you based on my personal journey, most likely will not be relevant to you (in fact, you are a better expert of your life than me).

    • Even if I tell you “what to do”, most likely you will agree for now but will not act or follow my advice. Why it is so? Because it doesn’t come from you.

  • Coach is not a therapist. It is ok to combine both depending on your goal and results, which you want to achieve but the coach has a different expertise and treats any person as “Creative, Resourceful and a Whole” no matter the challenges person might face.

  • So what coach is doing? Coach is guiding you (focusing on the present and the future, not past) in order to extend your full potential. In fact, many of us operate within the box (in an auto-pilot mode) and coach is helping to see whats beyond by helping to: 1) create awareness, 2) discover, what choices are available and 3) support your transformation (ACT: action, choice, transformation).

Weekly Source

As leaders, we should constantly ask ourselves: “Where am I"?

I’m a big fan of this this 3 min video (I watched it several times already) that gives a simple but powerful tool to create awareness and come up with conscious decisions, which bring a positive impact to others.

  • If we’re above the line: we are open, curious and committed to learning

  • If we’re below the line: we are closed, defensive and committed to being right

I encourage you to look at this video as it’s 1) short, 2) sweet and 3) creates a big step towards understanding yourself and supporting others!

Weekly Question

In order to see the progress you need to measure it. It can be money earned or tasks completed, but maybe it is something else?

The question is: what unit of measurement serves you best right now? I’m inviting you to reflect on that:

  • What would you do today if you wanted to maximize laughter?

  • What would you do today if you wanted to maximize peace of mind?

  • What would you do today if you wanted to maximize compassion to yourself?
